Thesis methodology in 6 steps: qualitative and quantitative

Choose and write your thesis methodology in six steps — question, approach, data, analysis, replicable writing — with a real example for each path.

Start from the question, not the method

A how-and-why question about meanings and processes calls for qualitative work; a how-much question about measurable differences calls for quantitative. Write the question in one sentence before choosing anything else.

Choose qualitative, quantitative, or mixed

Qualitative explains experiences through interviews, observation, or documents. Quantitative tests relationships through surveys or measurements with a defined sample. Mixed combines both when one lens cannot answer the question — never to look longer.

Design how you will collect data

Name the instrument, the participants, and the conditions: who, how many, where, and with what protocol. A real example: ten semi-structured interviews with secondary teachers about guided reading, recorded and transcribed — or a 20-item survey applied to two course groups.

Plan the analysis before gathering

Qualitative data gets coded into categories that answer the question; quantitative data gets described and compared with the right summary for its scale. If you cannot say how each objective becomes a result, the design is not finished.

Write it so someone could replicate it

Describe participants, instruments, procedure, and analysis decisions in enough detail that another student could repeat the study. Methodology defends itself with transparency, not with length.

Export and re-check

Export the chapter to Word or PDF from the chat, reopen the file, and confirm terms stay consistent with the theoretical framework and every instrument mentioned appears in the annexes.
