Both diagrams put ideas in boxes and draw lines between them, so they get confused all the time — and the confusion costs you study time. A mind map answers "what are the parts of this topic?". A concept map answers "how do the ideas relate to each other?". Vortixy draws both from your own material, and the quickest way to a useful diagram is to ask for the right one.
What a mind map is good at
A mind map has one idea in the centre and branches that get more specific as they move outward. Each branch is a category, each sub-branch a detail of it. In Vortixy the map is drawn as a balanced, colour-coded tree: every main branch has its own colour, so you can tell where a detail belongs at a glance. It opens in the Canvas with a text version of the same hierarchy, SVG download and markdown export. Use it to get the overall shape of a chapter, to plan an essay, or to organise a topic you are meeting for the first time.
What a concept map is good at
A concept map is a network of ideas where every line carries a few words that say how the two ideas are related: "produces", "depends on", "is a type of". Read any two boxes with the line between them and you get a complete sentence — "photosynthesis produces glucose". That is the point: building the map forces you to state the relationship, and stating it is where understanding is tested. Use it for cause and effect, for definitions that depend on each other, and for any topic where the links matter more than the list.
In Vortixy a concept map appears in the chat as a diagram with the general concepts at the top, the specific ones below and a linking phrase on every arrow. Cross-links between branches are welcome — they are often the most valuable part of the map.
How to ask for each one
Say which one you want, in your own words: "make me a mind map of the Roman Republic" or "make me a concept map of the water cycle, with a verb on every link". Keep the scope to one chapter or one question, and give the model your notes or paste the text so the map is built on your material. If the first draft is too crowded, ask it to split the topic into two maps rather than shrink the text.
A quick way to choose
Ask yourself what you are about to do with the diagram. If you want to see what is in a topic, or to start writing, choose the mind map. If you want to check whether you understand how the parts affect each other, choose the concept map. Many topics deserve both: the mind map first to find the branches, the concept map second to connect them.
Frequently asked questions
Does the concept map open in the Canvas like the mind map?
No. The mind map has its own Canvas view with SVG download and markdown export. The concept map is drawn inside the chat message; ask for changes in a follow-up message and the diagram is redrawn.
Can I get both from the same material?
Yes. Ask for the mind map first, then ask for a concept map of the same material focused on the branches you want to connect.
Why does a concept map need a phrase on every arrow?
Because a bare arrow hides the relationship. The phrase turns each connection into a statement you can read, check and correct.
